Jadavpur University Clash: Tension Rises After Violent Fight Between Left Students and ABVP

Tension has increased at Jadavpur University after a violent clash between members of a Left student organisation and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) over a general meeting of the Engineering Department.
Several students from both sides were injured in the clash. The situation remained tense on Thursday morning, with a heavy and uneasy atmosphere reported across the campus.
The tension increased further as both student groups announced separate protest gatherings. The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) called a gathering at the Jadavpur 8B bus stand at 11 am, while ABVP announced a counter-gathering at Golpark at 12 noon. With both groups planning programmes in nearby areas, there were concerns that fresh clashes could take place.
The matter has also reached the Calcutta High Court. A request was made for an urgent hearing regarding the incident, but the court did not accept the request for an immediate hearing.
Both sides have accused each other of bringing outsiders to the campus and attacking their members. The Left student organisations have alleged that outsiders were brought in to carry out the attack. ABVP has also raised questions over the organisation of the general meeting, particularly because there is currently no student union at the university.
Jadavpur University Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharya expressed deep concern over the repeated incidents of violence on the campus. He said that such incidents are damaging the reputation and academic environment of the university.
The Vice-Chancellor described the latest incident as highly unfortunate. He said that political differences can exist in an educational institution, but violence cannot be accepted.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, the police have already been informed about the situation. The university is expected to hold a meeting on Friday to discuss the incident and decide on further action.
Security and monitoring have also been increased inside the university campus to prevent any further trouble. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation, especially after both groups announced their separate protest programmes.
The latest clash has once again raised concerns about political tensions and violence inside Jadavpur University. University authorities are now expected to take further steps to prevent the situation from becoming more serious and to maintain peace on the campus.
