South Bengal Braces for a Rain-Soaked Weekend as Kolkata and Several Districts Face Heavy Rain

South Bengal along with the capital city is reported to be gearing up for an intense monsoon activity, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall across parts of Gangetic West Bengal over the following days. Kolkata and several southern districts are likely to be subject to extreme downpour, with August 17 and 18 emerging as the key days for heightened rainfall activity.
The latest IMD forecast indicates heavy rainfall over Gangetic West Bengal on August 17, with very heavy rainfall likely at isolated places on August 18. The weather department has also warned of thunderstorms and lightning in several pockets.
The rainfall is related to a low-pressure area over southeast Jharkhand and its neighbourhood areas, which is influencing these weather conditions across eastern India. The system is expected to deliver enhanced rainfall activity over Gangetic West Bengal during the next few days. The IMD has also warned of isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Gangetic West Bengal on August 17.
According to reports citing the IMD, several parts of southern Bengal could receive heavy rainfall through August 18. Coastal areas may also experience squally weather, with winds reaching 35–45 kmph and occasional gusts up to 55 kmph.
Kolkata is expected to remain under unsettled weather conditions, with spells of rain and thunderstorms possible. While the IMD’s warning for extremely heavy rainfall applies to isolated locations across Gangetic West Bengal and does not mean that the entire region, including Kolkata, will receive extreme rainfall, intense showers could still affect normal life in the city.
Heavy showers may lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas, slower traffic, reduced visibility and temporary disruption to daily commute. Conditions could vary significantly between districts and even between neighbouring localities, depending on the movement and intensity of the weather system.
With the rain spell continuing into the beginning of the week, residents across South Bengal are advised to follow the latest IMD and local administration advisories, particularly while travelling during periods of intense rainfall. The IMD has also advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea amid expected rough conditions along the coast.
For South Bengal, August 17 and 18 are likely to be the crucial days to watch, as the region remains under the influence of an active monsoon system and the possibility of intense rainfall persists.
