78 Medal-Winning Sportspersons Set to Get West Bengal Government Jobs as Nabanna Moves Recruitment Process Forward

KOLKATA: A long-awaited opportunity is finally taking shape for 78 sportspersons who have brought laurels to West Bengal at the national level. The state government has now moved ahead with the recruitment process for the selected medal-winning athletes, taking the sports-quota appointment scheme closer to its final stage. The latest development comes with the Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department beginning the verification process required before the candidates can formally enter government service.

The move is significant because the appointments are being made under a special-dispensation mechanism created specifically to recognise outstanding sporting achievements. Instead of waiting for conventional recruitment vacancies, eligible medal-winning sportspersons are to be appointed against posts specially created for the purpose. The state had introduced this framework in March 2024, when it announced that sportspersons winning medals at national and international competitions could be considered for direct appointment to government services under a special dispensation.

According to the latest reports, the 78 candidates recommended by the Youth Services and Sports Department are now being processed for appointments in the Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department. The posts earmarked for the present recruitment include 47 Group D positions, 21 Lower Division Assistant posts and 10 Upper Division Assistant posts. The appointments will be made according to the sporting achievement and eligibility of individual candidates.

The latest exercise is essentially a crucial verification stage rather than an open recruitment drive for fresh applicants. The selected sportspersons have been asked to complete the necessary verification formalities before appointment orders can be issued. A verification roll, or PVR form, has been made available for the candidates, who are required to furnish the necessary documents and evidence of their sporting achievements.

The documents are to be submitted to the Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department at Nabanna. Reports say candidates have been given 15 working days from the publication of the relevant notice to complete the submission process. The documents can be deposited at the designated drop-box on the seventh floor of Nabanna, at Room 703, during working hours, while submission by post has also been allowed.

The verification process assumes particular importance because the stateโ€™s original sports appointment framework makes verification of sporting credentials an essential part of the selection procedure. The 2024 notification states that certificates of selected sportspersons are to be verified with the concerned sports federation or association before the recommended list is forwarded to the relevant administrative department. Appointment letters are to follow the necessary formalities, including satisfactory police verification and medical examination.

For candidates belonging to reserved categories, the latest process also requires supporting certificates to be submitted along with the verification documents. Candidates belonging to categories such as Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes have been asked to provide the relevant documents in the prescribed manner. Those already employed in government service also have additional formalities to complete, including informing their present employer before the verification and medical procedures are taken forward.

The appointments are part of a broader policy under which sporting excellence is being treated as a legitimate route into state government employment. The original notification issued in March 2024 laid down a hierarchy linking sporting achievements and medals to different government posts. Depending on the category of competition and medal won, sportspersons could be considered for positions ranging from senior administrative and police posts to Lower Division Assistant and Group D positions.

Under that framework, sporting events were divided into different categories. The original rules covered competitions such as the Olympic Games, recognised World Championships and World Cups, along with Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Asian Championships, South Asian Games, World University competitions, National Games and senior national championships. The government subsequently amended the classification in 2026, altering the categorisation of the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games within the framework.

The policy also provides that the special appointments would be made through the creation of requisite posts, rather than by disturbing existing sanctioned positions. The 2024 notification specifically stated that posts for medal-winning sportspersons would be created under special dispensation without affecting the existing posts in the concerned categories.

For the 78 candidates currently in the pipeline, that provision has now translated into a concrete recruitment exercise. The creation of posts within the Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department has enabled the government to proceed with the appointments without treating the exercise as a conventional vacancy-based recruitment process. This is also why the development is being viewed as a recognition of sporting achievement rather than simply another government recruitment announcement.

The timing of the development is also noteworthy. The state had already approved the broader sports-quota appointment policy at Cabinet level in 2024, following concurrence from the Youth Services and Sports Department, Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department, Law Department and Finance Department. The latest verification exercise indicates that the administrative machinery is now moving from policy approval and recommendation towards the actual appointment stage for the 78 shortlisted sportspersons.

For the athletes concerned, the process marks an important transition from sporting recognition to professional security. Competitive sport often demands years of intensive training, travel and participation with uncertain financial prospects after an athleteโ€™s competitive career. A government appointment can therefore provide a more stable career path while allowing the achievements of medal-winning athletes to be formally recognised by the state.

However, the candidates have to complete the verification requirements within the stipulated period. Failure to submit the properly completed verification roll and required documents within the prescribed deadline could affect their appointment process. The latest instructions make it clear that candidates who fail to complete the formalities within the specified time may be treated as unwilling to accept the advertised appointment.

The government framework also does not treat appointment as an automatic entitlement solely on the basis of sporting achievement. The original notification makes clear that appointment remains subject to the prescribed procedure and approval of the competent authorities. Candidates must therefore successfully pass the relevant document, police and medical verification stages before the appointment process can be completed.

With the verification exercise now underway, attention will shift to the completion of scrutiny and the subsequent issuance of appointment letters. If the remaining formalities proceed without major hurdles, the 78 sportspersons could soon move from the playing field into government service, turning a long-promised recognition of sporting excellence into a tangible career opportunity.

The development also signals a broader message from the state: sporting success is not being viewed only through medals and trophies, but also as an achievement worthy of long-term institutional recognition. For the 78 selected athletes, the opening of the government-job door at Nabanna could therefore represent more than an appointmentโ€”it could be the beginning of a new chapter after years spent competing under the West Bengal banner.
