15 Lakh Voters Missing from Updated Electoral Rolls Amid E-Sign Issues

Kolkata, March 31: Around 15 lakh voter names are missing from the updated electoral rolls in West Bengal, raising serious concerns about voter inclusion ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. Officials have linked the issue primarily to technical glitches in the newly introduced e-sign verification system.

According to election authorities, the discrepancies emerged during the recent revision of voter lists, where digital authentication through e-signatures became a key requirement. Many applicants reportedly faced difficulties completing the e-sign process, which led to their names not being reflected in the final rolls. The problem has affected both new applicants and existing voters attempting to update their details.

The Election Commission of India has acknowledged the issue and stated that it is working to resolve technical challenges. Officials clarified that the missing names do not necessarily indicate permanent deletion but may result from incomplete or unverified applications during the revision process. However, the scale of the issue has impacted lakhs of voters and has drawn attention from political parties and civil society groups.

Concerns have also emerged regarding accessibility, as the reliance on digital verification may disadvantage individuals with limited access to technology or digital literacy. Some stakeholders have pointed out that the absence of a clear offline alternative for verification has added to the confusion among voters.

Election officials have urged affected individuals to verify their status through the official portal and apply for corrections if needed. They have also indicated that mechanisms are being strengthened to ensure that eligible voters are not excluded from the democratic process.

The development comes at a crucial time, as accurate electoral rolls are essential for ensuring free and fair elections. With the Assembly polls approaching, the resolution of these technical issues remains a priority for authorities to maintain public trust in the electoral system.
