Iran Allows Safe Passage for Indian Oil Tankers Through the Strait of Hormuz

Iran has permitted Indian oil tankers to pass safely through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz amid ongoing tensions in West Asia, following diplomatic discussions between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

According to officials, Indian tankers Pushpak and Parimal have already transited the narrow maritime corridor without disruption. The development comes at a time when several vessels linked to the United States, Europe, and Israel continue to face restrictions while navigating the critical shipping route.

The issue of safe maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz featured prominently in a recent conversation between Jaishankar and Araghchi.

The leaders also reviewed the evolving security situation in West Asia during the call, which marked their third discussion since the outbreak of the Iran war.

Indiaโ€™s energy security is closely tied to the Strait of Hormuz, through which more than half of the countryโ€™s crude oil and natural gas imports are transported. The narrow waterway is considered one of the worldโ€™s most important energy chokepoints.

Data from the Directorate General of Shipping indicates that at least 28 Indian-flagged vessels have been operating in or around the Strait of Hormuz since hostilities began in the region. Indian authorities are continuing to closely monitor developments to ensure the safety of shipping and the uninterrupted supply of energy.

Officials said that the diplomatic engagement remains ongoing as India seeks to safeguard its maritime interests and maintain stability in one of the most critical global energy transit routes.
