Indian Crew Member Killed as Iran-Linked Attacks Target Ships in Gulf

An Indian crew member was killed after an oil tanker was attacked in the Persian Gulf amid rising tensions involving Iran, raising fresh concerns about the safety of commercial shipping in the region.

According to international media reports, the tanker Safesea Vishnu was hit by an explosive-laden boat near Iraq’s Khor Al-Zubair port. The vessel, which is owned by a U.S. company but registered under the Marshall Islands flag, was carrying crude oil at the time of the incident. One Indian sailor lost his life in the attack while the remaining crew members were rescued.

The attack is part of a series of recent incidents targeting merchant vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes. Several ships have reportedly been damaged or attacked in the area in recent days as tensions escalate in the Middle East.

In another incident, a cargo ship heading towards Kandla port in Gujarat was also struck by projectiles while passing through the strait. Authorities confirmed that the vessel was on its way to India when the attack occurred.

India has expressed concern over the safety of seafarers, especially as many international merchant ships employ Indian crew members. Officials are closely monitoring the situation and have been in diplomatic contact with Iran to ensure safe passage for Indian-flagged vessels.

Following discussions between officials from both countries, Iran reportedly assured that ships sailing under the Indian flag would be allowed safe movement through the Strait of Hormuz.

The recent incidents highlight the growing risks to global maritime trade, as the Strait of Hormuz handles nearly a fifth of the world’s oil supply and is considered a strategic chokepoint for international shipping.
