After the SIR: How Mass Voter Deletions Put Matua Communities at the Centre of West Bengal’s 2026 Vote

Electoral Roll Row Matua Voters in West Bengal. In the year 2026, West Bengal is experiencing a severe political and social problem. It started with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter list conducted by election commission of India. This was in an attempt to revise and sanitize the register. Rather, it has made the process instill fear and confusion, particularly to the Matua community.

According to the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, there are a lot of true voters who have been eliminated. As far as official data shows, lakhs of names are removed, and millions of others are still on review. A good number of the affected people are in regions where Matua community constitutes significant population of the people.

The Matua people are largely a community of Hindu refugees who entered India from Bangladesh many years ago. The reason is that many families lack old documents to establish their Indian history. In the process of revision, officials checked voter records and matched them with older databases. Names were flagged or deleted in case records were not consistent. Cases of small spelling difference in names or missing documents also led to issues in some cases.

Others who are migrant workers were also denied their names since they were not at home when they were being verified. With West Bengal coming nearer to the 2026 Assembly elections, the matter has become very political. This is a simple yet serious issue of concern now. Coming to terms with the fact that so many people are afraid of losing the right to vote, this has posed greater concerns with respect to citizenship, identity, and confidence in the election system.
