5.7-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Leh-Ladakh, Authorities Monitoring Situation

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Leh-Ladakh on Sunday, according to the National Center For Seismology (NCS). Authorities confirmed that there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The tremor occurred at 11:51 a.m., originating at a depth of 171 kilometres. It was felt across the Himalayan belt, a seismically active zone stretching through Northern India.

Officials advised caution due to the possibility of aftershocks and said the situation continues to be closely monitored.

The earthquake is part of recent regional seismic activity. A 4.1-magnitude quake in Afghanistan on Saturday highlighted continued tectonic movement in neighbouring areas. NCS records also show smaller tremors earlier this month, including a 4.2-magnitude quake on January 15 and a 3.8-magnitude tremor on January 14, both occurring at depths below 100 kilometres.

Experts note that deep earthquakes generally produce weaker ground shaking at the surface than shallow ones, reducing the potential for damage despite wide tremor visibility.
