BJP Demands ECI Intervention In Bengal BDO Office Vandalism Cases

The BJP has accused the West Bengal Government of failing to maintain law and order after incidents of damage to Block Development Officer (BDO) offices during the ongoing electoral roll revision process. The party has urged the Election Commission Of India (ECI) to take strict steps to prevent further disruption.

According to the BJP, violence was reported at voter list hearing centres in Murshidabad’s Farakka area and later in Chakulia in North Dinajpur, where offices were allegedly attacked within a span of two days. The party has claimed that these incidents were politically motivated and aimed at obstructing the submission of voter deletion requests.

The BJP has further demanded that the Election Commission ensure unhindered filing of Form-7 applications, which are meant for removing names of ineligible voters, including those who are decreased, relocated or duplicated. The deadline for this process has been extended till January 19 for West Bengal and a few other states and Union Territories.

Senior BJP leader Amit Malviya said the repeated incidents indicate a deliberate attempt to intimidate officials and derail the electoral process. He asserted that the Commission must take firm corrective measures to deter such actions, especially in sensitive regions.

Meanwhile, state BJP president Samik Bhattacharya raised concerns over the credibility of the Special Intensive Revision exercise if genuine deletion claims are obstructed. He alleged that retaining invalid voter names could lead to electoral malpractice and called on the ECI to closely monitor the situation. Bhattacharya also suggested that a direct review by the Chief Election Commissioner may be necessary to restore confidence in the process.

The final Electoral Roll is scheduled to be published on February 14.
