India, Germany Sign Key Agreements to Boost Economic and Security Ties

New Delhi: India and Germany took a significant step on Monday to strengthen their bilateral partnership with the signing of multiple agreements aimed at boosting economic, security, and technological cooperation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz met in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, where they finalized 19 agreements covering defence, technology, clean energy, trade, and education.

The agreements include a Joint Declaration of Intent on Defence Industrial Cooperation, which is designed to foster long-term collaboration between Indian and German defence industries. Both sides also agreed to advance joint research and co-production of military equipment.

Officials said the two countries will work together on semiconductors, critical minerals, and clean energy projects. Germany pledged visa-free air transit for Indian passport holders, easing travel for Indian professionals and students.

Chancellor Merz affirmed Germany’s support for concluding the India-European Union free trade agreement, expected to unlock broader economic opportunities for both nations.

India and Germany highlighted their economic cooperation as bilateral trade crossed $50 billion, making Germany one of India’s key European trading partners. Leaders said they aim to expand collaboration in renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and digital technologies.

On education and workforce development, the partners launched a higher education roadmap and initiatives to strengthen skills training in renewable energy.

Modi and Merz also discussed climate action and infrastructure projects, including Germany’s commitment of funding under the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership.

The visit marks a deepening of ties as both nations seek stable trade partnerships and stronger geopolitical cooperation in the 21st century.
