A Sudden Demise befell Prashant Tamang, Darjeeling’s Golden Voice and Gorkha Pride (1983-2026)

The untimely death of Prashant Tamang, the winner of Indian Idol Season 3, 2007 on January 11 sent shockwaves through the music world, leaving a void that’s hard to fill.

Prashant Tamang’s life was a true inspiration. Born on January 4, 1983, in Darjeeling, he took on responsibilities early, joining the Kolkata Police after his father’s passing. Who knew that his singing talents would take him from performing with the police orchestra to the Indian Idol stage?
In 2007, Prashant Tamang’s Indian Idol journey captured the hearts of many, especially in Darjeeling. The Gorkha community rallied behind him, branding him “Pahad ka Gaurav” (Pride of the Hills). A a son of Darjeeling’s hills, of Gorkha descent, his Indian Idol triumph ignited unprecedented unity and pride among Gorkhas across Darjeeling hills, Terai, Dooars, Sikkim, North East India, and even Nepal and Gorkha communities world-wide. He even named his winning album “Dhanyavaad”, thanking the people, and sang “Bir Gorkhali”, a song that resonated deeply with his roots.

In an unfortunate turn of events, Prashant Tamang loses his life to cardiac arrest, passing away in his Delhi residence at the ripe age of 43. His wife Martha Aley shares, “I have been receiving calls from all over the World from people that I know and don’t know […] Please keep loving him as you loved him before. He was a great soul and a great human being. Please remember him like that.”

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences, saying, “Saddened by the sudden and untimely demise today of Prashant Tamang, the popular singer of Indian Idol fame and an artist of national renown […] I convey my condolences to his family, friends, and countless followers”.

The people of Darjeeling hills, Terai, and Dooars came together to bid a final farewell to Prashant Tamang, with a solemn procession from Bagdogra Airport. He shall rest in music forever, leaving his legacy through the memories and love of those who celebrated his music and spirit.
