“Pradeep is missing four fingers! How could a ‘illiterate’ person write that suicide note? Demand for a CBI investigation creates a political storm in the state!”

Kolkata : The alleged suicide of Pradeep Kar (57), a resident of Panihati, has now sparked a major political controversy in West Bengal. According to the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), Pradeep took his own life out of fear of the State Initiative Register (SIR) — approved by the President — and the NRC (National Register of Citizens). It is also being claimed that a suicide note recovered from beside his body mentioned the same fear.

On Wednesday, Abhishek Banerjee, the TMC’s national general secretary, visited Pradeep’s home and met his family members.

However, the BJP has raised several questions regarding the authenticity of that suicide note. BJP leaders have claimed that it is doubtful whether Pradeep was even capable of writing. According to his family members, Pradeep had studied only up to Class III, and most importantly, he had lost four fingers of his right hand in an accident back in 1980. There is no clear information about whether he could write with his left hand.

This has led the BJP to question — how could an ‘illiterate’ Pradeep, with four fingers missing, possibly have written that suicide note?

In this situation, local BJP leaders have demanded a CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) probe into the matter. Union Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar commented, “A proper investigation is necessary. It must be found out who actually wrote that suicide note. The NRC hasn’t even been implemented yet. It is Mamata Banerjee and her party who have been instilling fear among people over NRC.” Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari also questioned the validity of the suicide note.

On the other hand, TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee has directly blamed Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Election Commissioner Dyanesh Kumar for Pradeep’s untimely death. He even warned that an FIR (First Information Report) would be filed against them.

The deceased, Pradeep Kar, was unmarried and lived in the same flat with his brother and sister-in-law. On Monday night, he went to bed as usual, and the next Tuesday morning, he was found hanging in his room. Police recovered both the body and the “controversial” suicide note. The post-mortem report is yet to be released.

According to his family, Pradeep was a registered voter of the Panihati constituency and had even voted in 2024. His father had migrated from Bangladesh. Following this incident, all eyes are now on the unfolding investigation and the mystery behind the suicide note.
