City Remembers ‘Forgotten Hero’ Jatindra Nath Das on Birth Anniversary

KOLKATA, Oct. 27: Kolkata today paid homage to the revolutionary freedom fighter Jatindra Nath Das, often referred to as the city’s ‘Forgotten Hero’, on his birth anniversary.
A contemporary of Bhagat Singh, Das died at the age of 24 following a historic 63-day hunger strike in Lahore jail. The protest was a demand for the rights of political prisoners under the British regime.
His death in 1929 sent shockwaves across the nation. Reports from the period note that when his body was returned to Kolkata, Subhas Chandra Bose led a massive procession, with lakhs of people joining to mourn the young martyr. His birth anniversary is observed as a day to remember his “great deeds” and supreme sacrifice.
