Amit Shah Defends Constitution Amendment Bill Amid Parliamentary Debate

New Delhi, Aug 25, 2025 — Union Home Minister Amit Shah defended the proposed Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill in an interview with ANI, clarifying that former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned solely due to health reasons, dismissing any political speculation.

The bill seeks to mandate the removal of Prime Ministers, Chief Ministers, and other ministers if jailed for serious offences or corruption for more than 30 days. Shah expressed confidence that Parliament would support the measure, emphasizing that it upholds moral accountability in governance.

There will be members even in the opposition who will support morality and maintain the moral ground,” Shah stated.

Accusations Against Opposition

Shah accused opposition leaders of opposing the bill to protect their own leaders.

He said,

Even today, they are trying to ensure that if ever jailed, they can still govern from prison. The jail will become CM House, PM House.”

He also criticized Rahul Gandhi for his political actions, referencing the tearing of an ordinance to protect Lalu Yadav, and questioned Gandhi’s moral consistency after electoral defeats.

Parliament Security & Vice Presidential Nomination

Shah defended the deployment of CISF personnel in Parliament, clarifying it was as per protocol and aimed at safety, not political intimidation.

He also endorsed the NDA’s selection of Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan as its Vice Presidential nominee, citing regional balance with the President from East India and Prime Minister from North/West India and rejected claims of electoral strategy in Tamil Nadu.

Shah further criticized the opposition candidate, retired Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy, over his 2011 Salwa Judum-related judgment, claiming it weakened tribal self-defence and enabled Naxal survival.
