Police in Sitamarhi suspend SHO after trader’s killing

On August 22, 2025, Sitamarhi turned tense as news broke that Madan Singh, a 40-year-old rice mill owner from Parsauni village, had been fatally shot while riding his motorcycle to Dumra. Two masked gunmen on another motorcycle opened fire near Parsauni, striking him critically. Locals rushed him to Sitamarhi Sadar Hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival. People also recognized Singh as the brother-in-law of Paroha Panchayat Mukhiya Rani Kumari, which gave the tragedy both a personal and political dimension.

Police Investigation

The Sitamarhi police quickly set up multiple teams to investigate the murder. Officers began by collecting CCTV footage from nearby shops and traffic cameras to identify the motorcycle used by the attackers. Forensic experts examined empty cartridges recovered from the scene, and early reports indicate that the attackers used country-made weapons. Investigators also questioned local traders and associates of the victim to establish whether financial disputes or personal rivalries could have played a role in the crime.

Suspension of SHO

The protests took a political turn when locals accused the police of failing to provide security despite repeated warnings about rising extortion threats in the area. Bowing to public pressure, the Sitamarhi superintendent of police suspended the station house officer of Bairgania. Senior officials admitted that lapses in preventive policing may have given the attackers a free hand. This suspension, however, has done little to calm tempers as people continue to demand swift arrests and a crackdown on criminal gangs.

Wider Investigations into Organized Crime Links

As the probe deepens, investigators are now exploring the possibility that a gang operating across the Bihar-Nepal border carried out the murder. The police have reached out to intelligence units to track phone records, blacklisted numbers, and any suspicious financial transactions connected to the case. Sources indicate that local extortion rackets have expanded in Sitamarhi, and they may have targeted traders like Singh for refusing to pay protection money.

The murder has reignited debates on law and order in Bihar. Traders argue that the police often act only after crimes occur, rather than providing proactive security. Families of business owners in Sitamarhi now say they feel unsafe even in daylight. Although authorities suspended an SHO to appear responsive, the lack of visible breakthroughs in the investigation continues to erode trust.
