Kalyan Banerjee Quits TMC Post, Apologises for Supporting Moitra

TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee Resigns, Apologises Publicly for Supporting Mahua Moitra

Kalyan Banerjee has apologised to the nation for backing Mahua Moitra in the past

Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee resigned as Chief Whip of the party in Lok Sabha on August 5, 2025, following a very public fallout with fellow MP Mahua Moitra. Banerjee issued an emotional statement on social media, saying, “I apologise to the nation for defending her.”

Mahua Moitra’s Podcast Remarks Trigger Political Storm

The fallout started when Mahua Moitra appeared on a podcast and allegedly referred to Banerjee as a “pig.” She also accused male leaders in the party of misogyny and “frustrated behavior.” Her comments quickly went viral and sparked outrage within party ranks.

Banerjee responded harshly. He said,

“I stood by Mahua in 2023 when she faced the nation’s wrath. Today, she insults me. I deeply regret defending her in Parliament.”

Trinamool Replaces Banerjee with New Leadership

In response to Banerjee’s resignation, the Trinamool Congress moved swiftly. The party appointed Dr. Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar as the new Chief Whip and Satabdi Roy as the Deputy Leader in Lok Sabha.

Mahua Moitra congratulated both leaders in a brief social media post. She did not address Banerjee’s allegations directly.

Banerjee Accuses Moitra of Ingratitude and Arrogance

Kalyan Banerjee didn’t stop at resignation. He accused Moitra of lacking basic political courtesy and dehumanising her colleagues. He said young leaders should learn to respect party seniors rather than undermine them in public forums.

“This is not feminism. This is arrogance disguised as independence,” Banerjee told reporters in Kolkata.

BJP Attacks, Analysts See Damage Ahead of Elections

The BJP quickly reacted, calling the feud a sign of TMC’s internal instability. Party leaders said Mamata Banerjee’s leadership was failing to control growing dissent within her party.

Political observers believe this very public clash has exposed TMC’s inner cracks just months ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections.
