Law College Exam Centre Shift After Student Rape Sparks Outcry.

On July 29, 2025, Calcutta University confirmed the exam centre relocation from South Calcutta Law College. This urgent shift came after the June rape case involving a student on campus. Persistent police deployment and barricading made the centre unfit for LLB exams. The university responded quickly, prioritizing safety and transparency.

Exam Centre Relocation Triggers After Campus Rape Case

The shocking assault occurred on June 25 when a first-year student was raped by three men, including a faculty member and two students. The crime took place inside the college premises, near the students’ union room and the guard’s quarters.

Following the incident, police cordoned off key parts of the campus. Authorities stationed personnel round-the-clock at critical points. Due to this, conducting exams in such an atmosphere became impossible. Hence, the university announced the exam centre relocation for LLB students.

LLB Exams Shifted After Exam Centre Relocation

Calcutta University promptly revised its exam plans. The fourth, sixth, and eighth semester law exams, originally scheduled at the college, were moved to new centres. This decision aimed to prevent disruption and ensure a secure environment.

Officials also confirmed that second-semester exams would no longer be conducted at South Calcutta Law College. The rescheduled exams will take place between August 11 and August 26.

Exam Centre Relocation Followed Official Appeals and Security Demands

Members of the college’s governing body urged the university to change the exam centre. They cited the crime scene and the presence of law enforcement as major concerns.

In response, the university informed the Calcutta High Court that police would remain until a private security team took over. During this period, the campus remained unsuitable for conducting public exams.

Additionally, Calcutta University removed two of its nominated members from the college governing body. According to Vice-Chancellor Santadatta De, these members failed to prevent or report irregular faculty appointments. Their silence during governance issues added to the crisis.

Probe Underway Alongside Exam Centre Relocation

The university launched an internal investigation to examine mismanagement, faculty appointments, and ignored complaints. The fact-finding panel is reviewing documentation from the last eight years. This includes the appointment and role of Monojit Mishra, one of the accused.

The panel is also checking if the college administration overlooked complaints from students. Based on the findings, further disciplinary action may follow.

Meanwhile, the Kolkata Police’s detective department has taken over the case. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) continues to work under their guidance. Four accused individuals, including the staffer and students, are now in judicial custody.

Exam Centre Relocation Reflects a Larger Crisis

The exam centre relocation signals deeper flaws in the governance of South Calcutta Law College. Students now face not just legal trauma but also academic disruption. The lack of a timely response from college authorities has intensified criticism.

Moreover, the campus remains under partial lockdown. While some first-semester classes have resumed, the college remains closed to senior students. No clear timeline for reopening has been announced.

Calcutta University has reassured students that exam logistics and counselling will continue at new venues. Still, long-term solutions require better crisis management and stronger safeguards for students.

Calcutta University’s move to change the exam centre was swift and necessary. However, it highlights the broader need for structural reform, improved campus safety, and responsible governance. Until these issues are addressed, similar institutions may face disruptions when crises emerge.
