ED investigates Anil Ambani probe

On July 24, 2025, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) initiated large-scale raids across multiple cities, including Mumbai and New Delhi. The raids targeted companies and associates of Anil Ambani, chairman of the Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (RAAGA). These searches are part of an intensified investigation into the ₹3,000 crore Yes Bank loan fraud case.

ED officials confirmed that more than 35 premises were searched. These included the corporate offices of Reliance Infrastructure, Reliance Capital, and Reliance Home Finance. Residences of top executives, bank personnel, and consultants associated with RAAGA were also covered.

The probe stems from suspicions that several loans granted by Yes Bank between 2017 and 2019 were misused and diverted through shell firms. The ED acted on two FIRs filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in 2022, which had initially flagged these irregularities.

Deeper insights into Yes Bank loan fraud

According to ED sources, Yes Bank had sanctioned loans to several RAAGA subsidiaries without due diligence. Many approvals were given even before internal credit appraisals were finalized. Some loan documents were allegedly backdated, and multiple approvals lacked formal board clearance.

Investigators also found that a network of over 50 companies had been created to receive and divert funds. These entities existed only on paper. Their bank accounts showed little operational activity beyond receiving and transferring high-value funds.

The ED suspects bribes were paid to senior Yes Bank officials during the disbursement stage. Some payments were made in cash, while others were routed through offshore accounts.

Financial data supports Anil Ambani probe

Independent investigations by SEBI and the National Housing Bank (NHB) provided crucial leads. SEBI noted that Reliance Home Finance’s corporate loan book jumped from ₹3,742 crore in FY18 to ₹8,670 crore in FY19. This unprecedented rise was flagged as suspicious.

The NHB found discrepancies in the end-use of loans granted by Yes Bank to housing and infrastructure subsidiaries of the Ambani group. In several cases, the funds were used for purposes unrelated to project financing.

The Income Tax Department also provided the ED with tax audit reports showing asset inflation and irregular interest payments, suggesting a possible cover-up.

SBI joins Yes Bank loan fraud investigation

The State Bank of India (SBI) recently declared its loans to Reliance Communications and other Anil Ambani-led firms as fraudulent. This declaration comes after internal audits revealed consistent non-performance and repayment defaults.

SBI’s forensic reports point toward artificial structuring of deals, manipulation of books, and willful default. The bank has filed a formal complaint with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and is preparing to escalate the matter to the CBI.

Other lenders, such as Canara Bank and Bank of Baroda, have also submitted compliance reports highlighting anomalies in RAAGA’s loan utilization. These reports are now being merged into the larger ED investigation.

Market reacts sharply to Anil Ambani probe

Following news of the ED raids, stock prices of several RAAGA companies fell sharply on the Bombay Stock Exchange. Reliance Infrastructure dropped by 4.3%, while Reliance Capital slipped by 3.8%. Investor confidence remains low amid fears of deeper corporate misgovernance.

Market analysts believe this probe may affect the valuation of Reliance ADAG firms, especially if more evidence emerges. Credit rating agencies are also expected to revise their outlook on these companies in light of the expanding investigation.

Foreign investors have reportedly started reviewing their exposure to the group. Institutional trades in Reliance Group bonds were also down by 11% on Wednesday morning.

Legal framework and charges

The Enforcement Directorate is pursuing charges under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). This includes money laundering, criminal conspiracy, fraud, and breach of trust. Sources confirm that the ED will soon summon several top executives of RAAGA for questioning.

Legal experts suggest that if the ED establishes a pattern of fund diversion, the case could lead to attachment of properties and arrest of key individuals. The probe may also trigger action under the Companies Act and FEMA regulations.

Simultaneously, the CBI is likely to file a supplementary charge sheet based on ED’s new findings. If proven, this would become one of India’s largest corporate fraud cases in recent history.

Yes Bank loan fraud

The Yes Bank loan fraud took place between 2017 and 2019, involving suspected misappropriation of ₹3,000 crore. The ED is investigating over 50 entities, many of which are shell companies. More than 25 individuals, including senior executives and consultants, are under scrutiny. The case is being handled by multiple agencies including the ED, CBI, SEBI, NHB, and the Income Tax Department. Legal charges fall under PMLA, FEMA, and the Companies Act.

Implications of the Anil Ambani probe

This case could redefine India’s financial fraud enforcement landscape. Anil Ambani, once among India’s richest, now finds himself under mounting legal and regulatory pressure. The probe’s outcomes could affect the broader financial ecosystem, especially investor sentiment toward Indian conglomerates.

As the ED continues to unearth more evidence, more institutions and individuals may get pulled into the case. The government’s focus on corporate transparency and financial accountability appears stronger than ever.
