Exploring OpenAI’s Major AI Data Center in Abu Dhabi

OpenAI partners with UAE to launch Stargate UAE, a groundbreaking AI data center set to become the world’s largest outside the United States.

OpenAI has announced a major international expansion with plans to build the world’s largest artificial intelligence (AI) data center in Abu Dhabi. The project, named Stargate UAE, is a collaboration with UAE-based technology group G42 and several global partners.

The data center will begin operations in 2026 with an initial capacity of 200 megawatts, eventually scaling up to 1 gigawatt. It will span about 10 square miles, making it larger than Monaco. The facility will use Nvidia’s Grace Blackwell GB300 chips to power its AI servers.

This move is part of a broader U.S.-UAE agreement. In return for UAE investments in AI infrastructure, the U.S. has lifted restrictions on exporting advanced AI chips. The UAE can now import up to 500,000 chips per year, and will also invest in similar infrastructure within the United States.

The Stargate project supports OpenAI’s “OpenAI for Countries” initiative. This program aims to expand global access to AI technology. The Abu Dhabi data center will enhance AI capabilities in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia.

The facility is expected to support sectors like healthcare, education, and energy. It will also position Abu Dhabi as a key global hub for AI innovation.

A joint U.S.-UAE working group will oversee the project to ensure compliance with security standards and responsible AI development.

This development marks a significant step in OpenAI’s global expansion strategy. It underscores the growing importance of international partnerships in the future of AI.
