Widespread Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds Expected Along West Coast and Beyond

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has identified a low-pressure area developing over the east-central Arabian Sea near the Konkan-Goa coast. This system is expected to intensify into a depression within the next 24 to 36 hours. It has not yet been officially classified as a cyclone. However, there is a strong possibility it will strengthen further. It may be named Cyclone Shakti.

Alerts Issued Across Multiple States

In response to the developing weather system, the IMD has issued red alerts for several coastal districts of Maharashtra and Goa, including Raigad and Ratnagiri. These areas are forecasted to experience extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong gusty winds. Cities such as Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar are under orange alerts, with expected heavy rainfall and potential disruptions.

Goa, in particular, faces a red alert. Predicted wind speeds range from 50 to 60 km/h. They could gust up to 70 km/h over the coming days.

Widespread Rainfall Expected

The weather disturbance is expected to bring heavy rains to parts of Gujarat. Yellow alerts are issued for districts including Surat, Tapi, Valsad, Dang, and Navsari. Other states under caution include Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and Coastal Karnataka. Orange alerts have been issued in these areas due to significant rainfall. Gusty winds are also forecasted.

Sea Conditions: The Arabian Sea is expected to become rough. Wave heights are reaching 3 to 4 meters along the Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka coasts. The IMD has urged fishermen and those involved in maritime activities to avoid venturing into the sea until conditions improve.

Urban Flooding Risk: Heavy rainfall can lead to significant waterlogging in urban areas such as Mumbai. This may result in localized flooding. Such conditions can potentially disrupt daily life and transport services.

Landslide Warnings: Some hilly regions in Maharashtra and Goa are at risk of landslides. This is due to the intense and persistent rainfall.

The IMD has cautioned fishermen along the west coast. They are advised to avoid venturing into the sea. Rough sea conditions are expected during this period. Residents in affected regions are advised to stay alert, follow official updates, and take necessary precautions to ensure safety.
