Rajkummar Rao’s Bhool Chuk Maaf to Skip Theatres, Debut on OTT Amid Operation Sindoor Fallout

Theatrical Plans Cancelled Due to Heightened Security
Bhool Chuk Maaf, starring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi, was originally scheduled to hit theatres on May 9. It will now release directly on Amazon Prime Video on May 16. The decision follows increased national security measures after India launched Operation Sindoor in response to the Pahalgam terror attack.
Official Statement Emphasizes Patriotism
In an official statement, producers Maddock Films and Amazon MGM Studios said they were looking forward to the theatrical release but had chosen to prioritise national interest.
“While we were eagerly looking forward to celebrating this film with you in theatres, the spirit of the nation comes first. Jai Hind,” the statement read.
About the Film: Love, Loops and Laughter in Varanasi
Set in the holy city of Varanasi, Bhool Chuk Maaf is a romantic comedy where Rajkummar Rao plays Ranjan, a man stuck in a time loop on the day of his haldi ceremony. Wamiqa Gabbi stars as his fiancée, Titli. The supporting cast includes Seema Pahwa, Sanjay Mishra and Raghubir Yadav. The film is directed by Karan Sharma.
Streaming Release on Prime Video
The film will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on May 16. This digital release allows audiences to enjoy the film safely at home while avoiding public gatherings during a time of national tension.
Entertainment in the Shadow of Conflict
The film’s transition from a theatrical to a digital release reflects how national events are shaping cultural decisions. With Operation Sindoor still unfolding and tensions high across the border, this move highlights the increasing influence of security concerns on the entertainment industry.
