Delhi: Largest adrenal tumour to have been removed robotically

According to Dr. Sandeep Bansal, Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital, the recently removed adrenal tumour measures 18.2 x 13.5 cms. Notably, this tumour is the largest ever to be successfully removed robotically in a minimally invasive procedure.

Safdarjung Hospital has achieved a significant milestone in its robotic surgery program, successfully removing a giant adrenal tumour from a 36-year-old woman.

Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital, Dr Sandeep Bansal, informed that surgeons removed the adrenal tumour, measuring 18.2 x 13.5 cms. It is the largest ever adrenal tumour in the world to have been removed robotically in a minimally invasive fashion.

A team led by Dr Pawan Vasudeva, Prof & HOD Urology, conducted the surgery under the leadership of MS Dr Sandeep Bansal and Principal Dr Geetika Khanna.

The procedure was highly complex and posed significant risks due to the tumor’s large size and its proximity to three critical body structures: the inferior Vena Cava, the liver, and the right kidney.

The goal of the procedure was to completely remove the tumor without damaging the surrounding critical structures. Dr. Vasudeva emphasized the importance of precise dissection in achieving this objective. He also explained the benefits of the Da Vinci robot’s 3D vision and dexterous robotic arms in enhancing surgical precision beyond that of traditional laparoscopy.

The successful three-hour surgery resulted in the complete removal of the tumor without complications. The patient experienced an uneventful recovery, allowing for discharge within three days afterwards.

Dr. Vasudeva explained the advantages of robotic surgery

Robotic surgery offers several advantages, including the use of small incisions, enhanced precision, reduced postoperative pain, fast recovery, and a faster return to work. In contrast, an open surgical approach would have required a significantly larger skin incision, requiring several weeks for complete healing, Dr. Vasudeva explained.

Dr Sandeep Bansal said that this achievement shows Safdarjung Hospital’s skill in robotic surgery and its commitment to providing advanced healthcare free of cost to all patients.

A private hospital would have charged several lakhs for a robotic surgery of this complexity, but Safdarjung performed it completely free, ANI reported.
