Gen Z Men Believe Feminism is ‘Detrimental’ – Is it an Internet Phenomenon?
Recent studies, including a 2023 Pew Research Study, revealed a number of men have a growing skepticism towards the label, ‘feminism’. A sentiment among Gen Z men arises that feminism has become ‘toxic’ and ‘harmful’. The study revealed 39% of Gen Z men viewing ‘feminism’ positively – bringing up the question of ‘generational’ character. This raises the question – Is this issue rooted in the alarming influence of the internet?
The Role of Online Algorithms: Male Dominated Narrative Hesitates
Social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook have become a space for anti-feminist expression. Content creators such as Andrew Tate, have positioned ‘feminism’ as an invasion of masculinity, dominating the feeds with their problematic opinions. The algorithm promotes evocative content, encouraging young men into spaces where ‘feminism’ are reduced to mere tags. The claims ‘degrading men’ seeking to erase traditional gender roles would push men to look at male-dominated narratives.
Beyond the Screen: The Real-World Gendered Narratives
Apart from the internet, there are real-world grievances as well. Gen Z men face struggles in a traditional patriarchal society. These include stagnant salaries, rising rents and pressures of marriage. These challenges push men to ignore a sense of gender inequity. This becomes apparent in the times where feminists are building a space of their own, ‘threatening’ the masculinity inside. This brings feelings of bitterness amongst those who perceive feminism as overlooking their challenges. Moreover, evolving gendered dynamics and shifting social norms have left some men wrestling with their identity, looking at gender as a ‘threat’.
Internet and Miscommunication – A Generational Aspect
The disconnect reflects a gap of understanding. Feminism’s sole purpose to shatter the patriarchal forces gets into the ways of online debates. The young men may associate feminism with, ‘cancel culture’ that quashes the intentions of gender equality. On the other hand, women who strive to confront sexism in education, careers, and safety, are more likely to see feminism as essential. Without a middle ground, these contrasting perceptions deepens the division between toxic masculinity and feminism.
‘Going Beyond the Digital’
The increasing presence of the internet deepens the isolation, which leads to subtle ignorance of societal issues. There lies a need to bridge the gaps between the systemic issues. This requires the young people to understand the real meaning of ‘feminism’. A greater sense of empathy needs to run through the lines of algorithms – a key to make sense of ‘feminism’.
