124 acres of land at Deonar landfill has been allotted for housing the displaced. Deonar is Mumbai’s oldest and largest garbage dump, active since 1927. It is one of the top methane-emitting sites in the country.The government officially approved the land allotment on October 14, 2024. This marks the third land grant for the DRP in a single month. The government previously allotted land in Madh and the salt-pan areas of northeast Mumbai.

Health and Environmental Risks of Deonar Deonar emits over 6,200 kg of methane every hour. Toxic gases and leachate pose serious public health threats to nearby residents. CPCB rules advise against residential buildings within 100 meters of active landfills.—

Public and Political Opposition Rises

Opposition leaders, including Uddhav Thackeray, have slammed the decision as irresponsible. He vowed to cancel the Adani DRP contract if his party returns to power. Environmental activists say relocating people to a toxic site is dangerous and unethical.—
