86 Maoists Surrender in Telangana

IGP Multi Zone–I, S Chandrasekhar Reddy, addressing a press conference on Saturday to brief about the surrender of 86 members of banned CPI (Maoist) surrendered in Bhadradri Kothagudem.

In a significant development, 86 members of the banned CPI (Maoist) group from Chhattisgarh surrendered to the police in Bhadradri Kothagudem district of Telangana on Saturday.

The group, which included four Area Committee Members (ACMs), chose to give up violence and return to peaceful civilian life. The surrender took place in the presence of Inspector General of Police (Multi Zone-I), S Chandrashekhar Reddy, according to an official release.

Key Maoist Leaders Lay Down Arms

According to Superintendent of Police B Rohith Raju, the four ACMs had a reward of Rs 4 lakh each on their heads. Their decision, along with the others, marks a major step towards dismantling the naxal network in the region.

Operation Cheyutha Driving Change

The police noted that the recent wave of surrenders is largely due to the success of ‘Operation Cheyutha’, an initiative aimed at rehabilitating former Maoists and supporting tribal welfare. Under this program, the government has been offering various development and welfare schemes in tribal areas, encouraging insurgents to return to the mainstream.

So far in 2025, 224 Maoists of various ranks have surrendered under this initiative.

Losing Support Among Tribals

Police officials said the surrendered Maoists admitted that the CPI (Maoist) has lost public support, especially among tribal communities. They realized that the group operates on outdated ideology and obstructs development in remote tribal regions.

Recent incidents highlight this growing discontent. A tribal woman from Rampur village lost her leg, and another from Sodipara village died, both victims of explosives planted by Maoists. These villages lie between Bhadradri Kothagudem and Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh.

Appeal to Remaining Maoists

Police stated that Maoists continue to intimidate tribal populations and block development in agency areas out of fear that progress will threaten their survival.

The Telangana police have urged remaining Maoists who wish to surrender to come forward. They encouraged individuals to contact the nearest police station or approach district authorities, either directly or through their families, to reintegrate into society.
