Bangkok, April 2, 2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi meets Myanmar leader and military chief, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, during the BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok. The meeting came days after a deadly earthquake devastated Myanmar, killing over 3,100 people and injuring thousands.

Leaders Meet at BIMSTEC Summit

The meeting took place during the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) summit. Leaders from South and Southeast Asia gathered to discuss trade, security, and regional stability.

Earthquake Tragedy in Myanmar

Just days before the summit, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar. Over 3,100 people lost their lives. Thousands more were displaced and injured, prompting international concern.

India Responds with Swift Aid

India quickly extended humanitarian assistance to Myanmar. Relief teams, medical aid, food supplies, and rescue personnel were sent to help affected regions. Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting its neighbor.

Myanmar Junta Leader Breaks Isolation

General Min Aung Hlaing’s attendance marked a rare international appearance. After Myanmar’s 2021 military coup, global powers largely distanced themselves from his regime.

Focus on Strategic Connectivity

Modi and Min Aung Hlaing also discussed key connectivity projects. Talks included the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway and Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project.

Border Security and Trade Cooperation

Both sides addressed border security challenges, cross-border smuggling, and insurgency concerns. Strengthening trade links and customs cooperation also featured in the dialogue.

India’s Balanced Diplomatic Stand

India maintained a neutral stance—offering aid and engagement without endorsing the military regime. Modi emphasized peace, stability, and respect for sovereignty in the region.

Geopolitical Significance of the Meeting

The meeting underscored India’s efforts to balance humanitarian responsibilities with regional strategic interests. It also signaled India’s continued focus on the Act East policy and neighborhood diplomacy.
