Israel Mulls Closure of Al Jazeera’s Local Bureau Over Alleged Pro-Hamas Incitement

Jerusalem – Israel’s Communications Minister, Shloma Karhi, announced on Sunday that he was pursuing the possible closure of Al Jazeera’s local bureau, accusing the Qatari news station of engaging in pro-Hamas incitement and putting Israeli soldiers at risk of attack from Gaza.

The proposal to shut down Al Jazeera’s bureau had undergone a thorough review by Israeli security officials and was currently being examined by legal experts, according to Karhi. He indicated that he planned to bring this proposal before the Israeli cabinet later in the day. As of now, Al Jazeera and the Qatari government have yet to release official statements regarding the matter.

Karhi asserted that Al Jazeera was responsible for incitement and jeopardizing Israeli citizens and soldiers, referring to it as a “propaganda mouthpiece.” He claimed that the news outlet had been broadcasting inflammatory content and even filming Israeli troops in assembly areas outside Gaza. The minister stated, “It is unconscionable that Hamas spokespeople’s message goes through this station,” concluding with the hope that “we will finish with this today.” It remains unclear whether the latter statement pertains to a cabinet discussion or the implementation of a closure.
