After days of intense heat and rising humidity, Kolkata is set for a change in weather today. According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) Kalbaishakhi (nor’wester) is likely to sweep across the city signalling the onset of pre-monsoon thunderstorm activity in the region.
Kalbaishakhi is expected by afternoon–evening
After witnessing some of the hottest days of the season, with temperatures going around 36°C, Kolkata is expected to see a gradual shift in the weather.
According to IMD forecasts, light to moderate thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds, lightning, and rainfall are likely to occur during the afternoon or evening hours today. There’s possibility of temporary drop in temperature bringing relief.
Weather experts suggest that this could mark the beginning of a more active thunderstorm phase over South Bengal, with increased chances of intense storms between Tuesday and Thursday.
In districts of Howrah, Hooghly, and the two 24 Parganas there will be thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds of 40-50 kmph and lightning between April 6 and April 9. The IMD’s district-wise forecast indicates that rainfall activity will become more intense mid-week.
North Bengal districts are also expected to experience similar weather conditions. Districts such as Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Coochbehar and Alipurduar may experience thunderstorms with wind speeds from 30-40 kmph and reaching up to 60 kmph, along with heavy rainfall and hailstorms in some areas. An orange alert has been issued for these regions during this time period as well.
