New Zealand won the toss and elected to bowl first. Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma opened for India, and the pair scored 92 runs in the batting powerplay, which is the highest by any team in the T20 World Cup. Sanju Samson, again played an impressive knock, scoring 89 off 46 balls, and Abhishek Sharma regained his form and stormed a fast knock of 52 in just 21 balls. Ishan Kishan then came next and scored an amazing 54 off 25 balls. Both Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan maintained an astonishing partnership of 105 runs, and the three batsmen helped India reach 203 in just 15.1 over(s). The team was looking invincible until New Zealandโ€™s James Neesham came to the ball in the 16th over and picked up 3 wickets in that over. James Neesham took the wicket of Sanju Samson 89 (46), Ishan Kishan 54 (25) and captain Suryakumar Yadav 0 (1). Hardik Pandya looked steamy, but also lost his wicket after scoring 18 off 13 balls. In the death overs, Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube were still standing tall. However, in the last over of the first innings, Shivam Dube smashed the bowler to add 24 runs, giving India a huge finish. Both Tilak Varma 8* (6) and Shivam Dube 26* (8) remained not out. Shivam Dubeโ€™s 24 runs in the last over helped India reach a massive total of 255/5. New Zealand needed 256 runs to win their first ever ICC T20 World Cup.

In the second innings, batsmen Tim Seifert and Finn Allen came to open for New Zealand. Soon, Finn Allen 9 (7) lost his wicket to Axar Patel after Tilak Varma took the catch. Finn Allen scored a century in the semi-final against England previously in this tournament at 100* (33), and thatโ€™s why it was important for India to take Allenโ€™s wicket. But then, New Zealand never got to play their fierce match, as next Rachin Ravindra (2) lost his wicket to Jasprit Bumrah, and soon Glenn Philips (5) was bowled out by Axar Patel again. Mark Champman next came to bat but was bowled out by Hardik Pandya. Then Varun Chakravarthy took opener Tim Seifertโ€™s wicket of 52 (26) when Ishan Kishan took a wonderful catch at deep mid-wicket. At the end of the 8th over, New Zealandโ€™s score was 72/ 5, and New Zealand needed 184 runs in just 72 balls. Up next, Daryl Mitchell and captain Mitchell Santner were successful in achieving a 52-run partnership. However, Daryl Mitchell was dismissed for 17 (11) after edging a delivery from Axar Patel, with Ishan Kishan taking the catch behind the stumps.

After that, Jasprit Bumrah produced a sensational spell in the final, turning the game in Indiaโ€™s favor with crucial wickets. Bowling with remarkable control and pace, he struck at key moments to break New Zealandโ€™s momentum. Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Mitchell Santner 43 (25), James Neesham 8 (7), and Matt Henry 0 (1) in quick succession, as all three batters were caught in the deep while attempting big shots. It was all game-set for India as New Zealand were down to 152/9 in the 18th over. Abhishek Sharma surprisingly bowled the 19th over, where he picked up the wicket of Jacob Duffy 3 (5) and New Zealand were all out at 158.

India defeated New Zealand by a margin of 96 runs and became the first country in the ICC T20 World Cup to win as the host nation. No other country won the T20 World Cup in which they hosted the event. Sanju Samson was crowned the โ€˜Player of the Tournamentโ€™ trophy after he continued his remarkable form, scoring 97* against West Indies, 89 against England in the semi-final, and 89 in the final against New Zealand.

โ€œFeels like a dream. Very happy and grateful. Out of words, out of emotions. [In his three fifties, thought process] To be honest, it started one-two years before. When I was in the 2024 World Cup team where I didn’t play, I kept visualizing, kept on working and this was exactly what I wanted to do,โ€ said Sanju Samson after the victory at Narendra Modi stadium.
