The Maharashtra government on Tuesday officially withdrew its 2014 decision granting a 5% reservation to Muslims in education and public sector employment, declaring all related provisions invalid.
The Social Justice Department’s fresh Government Resolution makes it clear that no admissions, recruitments or caste validity certificates can be issued under the scrapped category. Officials described the move as a formal closure of a policy that had not been in force for years.
The quotation had been announced in July 2014 through an ordinance placing Muslims under the Special Backward Class A-category. However, the proposal soon became entangled in legal proceedings and never took practical effect.
The ordinance lost validity after it failed to secure legislative approval within the required time frame. In later proceedings connected to a Special Leave Petition, the Supreme Court of India struck down the reservation, putting a definitive end to the provision.
