Aadhaar vs Green Card Showdown as India Begin World Cup Journey Against USA

Mumbai : A fun tagline is doing the rounds ahead of Saturday’s India vs USA clash in Mumbai: Aadhaar Card vs Green Card!

Officially, it’s a contest between two countries. But the US team features around five cricketers who were born in India. Some of them even represented India at junior World Cups and played regular domestic cricket. US captain Monank Patel, for instance, was born in Gujarat. It’s being said that his entire family will be at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday to watch the match they’ve already booked a private box.

Saurabh Netravalkar is another name that adds an emotional layer to the fixture. There was a time when he regularly played at the Wankhede; in many ways, it’s his home ground too. Ahead of the World Cup match against India, emotions seem to have caught up with him. “I played a lot of cricket in Mumbai at one point,” Saurabh said. “Now I’ll be playing a World Cup match against India at the Wankhede. It feels like a full circle has been completed.”

Inside the Indian dressing room, however, there is little room for emotion. And understandably so. Even before the tournament began, injuries started haunting the Indian camp. Just 24 hours before India’s World Cup campaign kicked off, pacer Harshit Rana was ruled out of the tournament after injuring his knee during the warm-up match against South Africa.

Speaking at a press conference earlier in the day, captain Suryakumar Yadav had sounded uncertain. “I don’t know if he’ll be able to play. We’ll take a call on the morning of the match. But honestly, Harshit isn’t looking too good,” he had said. By night, Surya’s fears came true. Harshit was officially ruled out, and Mohammed Siraj was drafted into the squad as his replacement.

On top of that, there’s the added pressure of defending the title. No team has ever won the T20 World Cup on home soil, and no team has won it three times. From that perspective, history beckons India.

Despite the injury concerns, Suryakumar is trying his best to keep the team relaxed. At the press conference, he appeared upbeat, smiling, joking, and visibly at ease. One journalist asked him how he manages to stay so cheerful even when the team doesn’t perform well and whether this attitude developed after becoming captain.

Surya replied with a grin, “There’s already plenty of pressure from outside. For me, it’s about how much you enjoy the game as a team. My mantra is simple, while you’re on the field, enjoy every moment. Of course, there will be pressure. But the positive side is that we’ll get tremendous support. That support pushes us to play better. People have been watching the kind of cricket we’ve played over the last two years. So I’ve told everyone, go out there and just enjoy the game.”

It’s worth mentioning that Suryakumar strongly dislikes the word captain. He doesn’t want to be addressed that way. He wants to be a true leader. That’s why he said, “Don’t call me captain, call me a leader.” Captain or leader, what’s in a name? The task remains the same: making sure the World Cup doesn’t leave the country.
