A Winter Evening Stroll at the Kolkata International Book Fair 2026

As dusk gently settled over Salt Lake, the Boimela Prangan pulsed with words, warmth and wonder at the 49th International Kolkata Book Fair 2026, reaffirming its status as Asia’s largest literary event. Scheduled from January 22 to February 3, the fair, open daily from 11 am to 8 pm has already drawn over 11 lakh visitors in its opening week, turning winter evenings into collective celebrations of reading and culture.

Book lovers thronged iconic stalls like Ananda, Penguin, Scholastic, Woodpecker and Bloomsbury, which remained cult favourites, their aisles packed with readers picking up bestsellers without hesitation. A noticeable surge was seen at manga and graphic novel sections, reflecting India’s growing youth fascination with Japanese fiction, anime and visual storytelling.

The fair also saw familiar faces. Bengali celebrities Abir Chatterjee and Anupam Roy were spotted browsing through various stalls, drawing curious glances from visitors. This year’s theme country, Argentina, became a focal point of interest especially for football-loving Bengalis. Inside the Argentina pavilion, a small auditorium screened original footage of legendary footballer Diego Maradona, drawing steady crowds. The stall also showcased portraits and photographs, information on Buenos Aires, reflections on the Borgesian city, and curated theses that offered cultural depth beyond the sport.

Cinema lovers found delight at a grand stall designed like a vintage cinema hall, marked by a bold “Ticket” sign leading visitors into a world of film history. A striking 3D paper statue of Uttam Kumar stood at the forefront, paying homage to the matinee idol. Nearby, a dedicated stall on Satyajit Ray displayed his novels alongside a moving gallery of photographs chronicling his lifetime of work, an unmissable pause for admirers.

Students formed the largest segment of attendees. School and college-goers crowded the Sister Nivedita University stall, enthusiastically answering questions on science and galaxies in exchange for awards, turning learning into lively participation. Across the fairgrounds, cultural programmes, singing, dancing and recitation unfolded at multiple venues, adding rhythm to the literary hum.

No Kolkata winter evening is complete without food. The aroma of tea from Gautam’s stall, Kashmiri Kahwa from dry fruit sellers, and plates of papdi chaat, rolls and chow mein kept visitors warm and cheerful. Adding visual charm were familiar performers: a man dressed as Rabindranath Tagore greeting visitors near the main sign, and the iconic gold-painted living statue, balancing books on either side, standing motionless yet magnetic.

With Argentina as the theme country and literature as its heartbeat, the Kolkata International Book Fair 2026 continues to be a joyful confluence of books, ideas, art and everyday pleasures, best experienced, perhaps, on a winter evening stroll.
