Picnic Turns Fatal: College Student’s Mysterious Death Raises Murder Suspicion in Bongaon
North 24 Parganas : A winter picnic with friends ended in tragedy for a college student who never returned home. On Wednesday, the mysterious death of 19-year-old Roni Raha, a first year BA student and a resident of Bakshi Pally under Bongaon police station, sparked intense tension in the area. According to his friends, Roni died after drowning in a pond while on a picnic in the Sundarpur area. However, the family is unable to accept this as a mere accident due to multiple injury marks found on his body and inconsistencies in the friends’ statements.
According to local sources, Roni had gone on a picnic to Sundarpur yesterday with several of his friends. After hours of celebration, his friends informed Roni’s family in the afternoon that he had slipped and fallen into a pond while washing utensils. The friends claimed that they rescued Roni from the water and rushed him to Bongaon Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The family’s suspicion grew after seeing the body at the hospital. One of Roni’s sisters alleged that there was a deep wound on his forehead and what appeared to be burn marks on his big toe. The family questioned how such injuries or burn like marks could occur from simply falling into a pond.
The mystery deepened further when the family noticed that the friends’ clothes were dry. According to the family, if the friends had entered the water to rescue Roni, at least some of their clothes should have been wet. However, eyewitnesses claimed that none of the friends had wet clothing. Roni did not know how to swim, raising further questions about why the calm natured young man would enter the pond alone.
An uncle of Roni said, “There is no consistency in what the friends are saying. We want the police to conduct an impartial investigation and bring out the truth.” Meanwhile, a shadow of grief has descended over Bokshi Palli area due to this incident, and local residents are seething with anger. They are vocally demanding exemplary punishment for the guilty.
According to sources at Bongaon police station, the police have already started investigating the incident. The body has been sent for post-mortem. A police officer said, “Once we receive the preliminary post-mortem report, it will be clear whether this was purely an accident or something else. The process of questioning the friends has begun.”
At present, the bereaved family and the local people are waiting for the post-mortem report. The administration is investigating how an ordinary picnic turned into such a tragic death.
