Bridgerton Season 4: Inclusivity at the Heart of Netflix’s Regency Romance

Bridgerton

As Bridgerton returns to Netflix with its fourth season on January 29, creator Jess Brownell is taking a moment to reflect on how the show has evolved from a bold experiment into a global cultural phenomenon. What once felt like a risk—a colourful, inclusive reimagining of a traditional period drama—has now become the series’ greatest strength.

Brownell admits that in the early days, even the writers weren’t sure how audiences would respond to a Regency-era romance told through a modern lens. Yet Bridgerton struck a chord worldwide, proving that history-inspired stories can still feel deeply contemporary. At its core, the show was always designed as an “inclusive fantasy,” a space where more people could see themselves represented on screen.

Season 4’s Core Theme: Courage and Connection

Season 4 continues that vision by focusing on Benedict Bridgerton, played by Luke Thompson, and Sophie, portrayed by Yerin Ha. Brownell describes the season’s central theme as “courage.” Benedict is carefree and charming but afraid of commitment, while Sophie is hardworking and grounded, yet hesitant to dream of more. Their love story, she explains, is about emotional balance—two people helping each other become whole.

The show’s global reach, especially in India, has been particularly meaningful for its creators. Last season’s Lady Vikaspuri sparked a viral meme wave among Indian fans, something Brownell says delighted her. She credits this response to the show’s commitment to representation, noting that seeing oneself reflected on screen can inspire people to dream more boldly.

A Regency Drama That Rewrote the Rules

More than lavish balls and whispered scandals, Bridgerton has quietly reshaped the period drama genre. Its success proves that inclusivity and romance are not opposites but powerful partners. As writing for Season 5 nears completion, Brownell makes one thing clear: representation isn’t an afterthought—it’s the heart of Bridgerton.
