Ben Stokes Wants McCullum Despite Losing the Ashes Against Australia: “I Can’t See Someone Else”

England’s leadership strategy, known for the aggressive Bazball style of cricket since 2022, is now under pressure. Although this strategy helped England break a 15-year drought by winning in Melbourne, the team has struggled to maintain consistency during the Ashes. As a result, England lost three of the first four Tests, and the visitors dominated the series, bringing England’s morale down.
Still, skipper Ben Stokes insisted that this is not the time for major changes. Speaking ahead of the final Test in Sydney, Stokes said, “There is no doubt in my mind that Brendon McCullum and I are the right people to carry on doing this for the near future. I cannot see anyone else who could take this team from where we are now to even bigger heights.”
Stokes admitted that England’s results and consistency have declined compared to the early success of the Stokes-McCullum era. He said he is disappointed with the team’s continuity and execution, which he believes are the main areas that need improvement rather than changing the leadership.
England continues to believe in the Bazball strategy — a fearless, attack-minded approach that reshaped England’s Test cricket after Stokes and McCullum took charge in 2022. With this style, England played positive cricket with clear thinking and execution, but they also faced criticism for inconsistency and occasional tactical mistakes, especially in difficult overseas conditions.
In the age of social media, players and management have faced heavy trolling after the Ashes loss. Stokes said, “It’s impossible not to see everything these days. Maintaining focus has been a challenge, but it is also part of modern top-level sport.”
McCullum has made it clear that he wants to stay in the role, although the final decision rests with the ECB. England managing director Rob Key has also shown support for both McCullum and Stokes, backing them to continue with the same intensity instead of making changes.
As England prepares for upcoming tours and the home summer season, Stokes has clearly shown that he wants McCullum by his side as England rebuild from their Ashes disappointment and work towards future success.
