Misery for North Bengal flood victims with the loss of identity

As North Bengal deals with the aftermath of devastating floods and landslides, thousands of residents are suffering with the loss of vital identity documents. With relief efforts taking place and the immediate need to prove citizenship for providing relief and rebuilding the situation is causing a new wave of anxiety among affected families.

Lost IDs due to the calamity and the suffering caused

The floods and landslides which recently hit North Bengal have not only taken lives and destroyed homes but have also destroyed countless residents’ crucial identity documents. With a special revision of electoral rolls pending, the fear of being claimed stateless hangs over many. Residents of Mirik where several families lost loved ones met CM Mamata Banerjee to beg for help in recovering or reissuing their Aadhaar, PAN, and ration cards, all essential for government relief and citizenship status.

Urgent reissue of documents is appealed for

Responding to the state of helplessness, the Chief Minister directed officials to set up special camps in affected areas for immediate distribution of new documents and school supplies. “Arrangements need to be made for those who lost everything,” Banerjee said, highlighting the need for both state support and repair of infrastructure. For young survivors like student Arpita Chetri whose family lost nearly everything in a landslide obtaining new papers is a necessary step toward rebuilding.

Struggle for basic rights

Sheltered victims in relief camps have stated that they had only fled their homes with clothes and had to leave all documents behind during the emergency. Most of them fear that without proper documentation they may have difficulties to get aid and future government support.

Government Steps Up, But Challenges Remain

Community kitchens and temporary relief measures are being organised but a lot of uncertainty remains with major motorable roads, bridges and important means of communication damage. The administration has promised jobs for affected families and stricter monitoring on relief logistics. But for many regaining proof of their identity remains the hardest battle before normalcy can return.

The loss of vital identity documents has increased and the hardships faced by the flood affected residents of North Bengal’s. It had threatened  their access to essential government aid and relief. While the state government has initiated measures of the reissuing of their documents and is providing support, the path to recovery remains challenging for many families. Rebuilding their lives will require continued coordinated efforts to restore not only physical infrastructure but also the legal identity that safeguards citizens’ rights and access to services.
