29 Dead in Punjab Floods Within a Week

Heavy rains and overflowing rivers have created a serious flood situation in many parts of Punjab. Several districts, including Rupnagar, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, and Ludhiana, remain affected as water from the Sutlej, Ravi and Beas rivers continues to rise.

The deluge forced the state government to shut down all colleges and universities until September 3 to ensure public safety. At least 29 people have died, and more than 2.56 lakh individuals have been displaced, with significant damage to crops, property, and infrastructure.

So far, thousands of acres of crops such as paddy and maize have been damaged. Farmers say this is a huge setback, as many fields remain under water. Livestock have also suffered losses, with reports of animals drowning in flooded villages.

Several local leaders and celebrities have joined relief efforts. Actor Sonu Sood, along with Ammy Virk, has stepped in to support and adopted 200 displaced families. Singer Diljit Dosanjh has adopted 10 flood-affected villages, mobilizing essential supplies and aid.

Political pressure is mounting for wider relief action. Congress leader Amrinder Singh Raja Warring has urged the Centre to release a special aid package, citing massive damage to life, property, and paddy crops in over 1,300 submerged villages.

Residents remain trapped as water levels rise steadily. Officials are urging caution and preparing for more rain ahead. Rescue and relief teams continue their round-the-clock work amid urgent calls for swift, coordinated help.
