Andhra Teacher Accused of Breaking Student’s Arm, Goes Absconding; Similar Assault Reported in Kerala

A shocking case of corporal punishment has emerged from Andhra Pradesh, where a Class 8 student’s arm was allegedly broken by his teacher during an assault at Sri Tanush School in Madhuravada, Visakhapatnam.

According to reports, the Social Sciences teacher, identified as Mohan, allegedly smashed an iron table on the student’s arm, leaving it fractured in three places. Doctors at Medicover Hospital, where the boy is undergoing surgery, confirmed the multiple fractures. The accused teacher is currently absconding, and police under PM Palem jurisdiction have launched a manhunt.

The incident has triggered widespread outrage among parents and social activists, who are planning to stage protests demanding strict action against the teacher and accountability from the school management.

In a separate incident in Kerala’s Kasaragod district, a Class 10 student at Kundamkuzhi Government Higher Secondary School suffered a ruptured eardrum after allegedly being slapped by the school headmaster during a morning assembly on August 11. The assault reportedly came after the boy moved gravel with his legs during the gathering.

The boy’s younger sister, who witnessed the assault, fell ill after crying, prompting the family to uncover the incident.

Kerala Education Minister V. Sivankutty confirmed he has ordered a probe into the complaint. “The mother informed me that the child’s eardrum was torn. I have repeatedly reminded teachers that students cannot be physically hurt,” the minister said.

Both cases have sparked debate on the recurring issue of corporal punishment in Indian schools, with activists demanding stronger enforcement of child protection laws.
