Kolkata Traffic Alert: Vidyasagar Setu Closed for 16 Hours Today

Kolkata, August 24 — Commuters in Kolkata are bracing for major traffic disruptions on Sunday as the Vidyasagar Setu will remain shut for 16 hours to facilitate essential repair and maintenance work.

According to officials, the bridge will be closed to all vehicles from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. while the Hooghly River Bridge Commissioners (HRBC) carry out tasks including lifting and placing steel portal beams, replacing stay and holding cables, and rehabilitating bearings.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma, IPS, has issued a notification confirming the closure and detailing special traffic arrangements.

Westbound traffic from Kidderpore Road will be diverted via 11 Furlong Gate–Hastings Crossing–St. Georges Gate Road–Strand Road–Howrah Bridge.

Eastbound traffic via CGR Road from Khidderpore towards Vidyasagar Setu will be rerouted from Hastings Crossing through St. Georges Gate Road–Strand Road–Howrah Bridge.

KP Road vehicles aiming for Vidyasagar Setu via the Y-intersection will be diverted to 11 Furlong Gate, then through RP Road–Red Road–Howrah Bridge.

Police have warned that further diversions may be imposed depending on congestion. Commuters have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel near the bridge and to use alternative routes.

With one of Kolkata’s busiest connectors out of service for the day, long snarls are expected, and citizens have been advised to plan their journeys in advance.
