Kolkata MLA Under CBI Scanner Over RG Kar Scandal

On August 24, 2025, Central Bureau of Investigation agents arrived at the Sinthee residence of TMC MLA Sudipto Roy, seeking answers related to financial irregularities and a rape-murder case at RG Kar Medical College. Although the MLA was not home, investigators spoke with his daughter, indicating that they are tracing his communications with former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh on the day of the crime—August 9, 2024.

Alleged Corruption and Power Abuse

This is not the first time the MLA’s residence has come under investigation. The CBI and Enforcement Directorate previously raided his home over allegations that Roy helped siphon medical instruments from the hospital to his nursing home. Several complaints, including from ex-deputy superintendent Akhtar Ali, accuse Roy of using his influence as chairman of the Rogi Kalyan Samiti to allow unauthorized stalls, manipulate staff appointments, facilitate fake admissions, and divert patients to his private facility.

A Larger Conspiracy

Investigators believe the probe is expanding beyond financial misconduct to include a “larger conspiracy” involving the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee at RG Kar. The MLA’s alleged phone call with Ghosh on the morning of the crime suggests possible coordination, or at least awareness of unfolding events. This connection raises concerns that powerful figures used institutional control to mask or manipulate key aspects of the investigation.

A System Under Strain, Communities Still Waiting

The RG Kar scandal has once again revealed how fragile the accountability structure of public hospitals in Kolkata remains. For years, patients and their families have raised complaints about corruption in admissions, extortion by middlemen, and lack of transparency in treatment, yet their voices rarely reached higher authorities. This silence created the perfect ground for powerful individuals to exploit both public money and the vulnerability of patients.
