GST Exemption Insurance: Relief Plan on the Table
The Centre has put forward a proposal that could bring real relief to families across IndiaโGST exemption insurance for individual life and health policies. At present, premiums attract 18% GST, which often makes insurance feel more like a burden than a safety net. If approved, this move could make policies cheaper and help more people protect themselves financially.

GST Exemption Insurance Under Review
The idea was discussed in a recent meeting of the Group of Ministers (GoM) on insurance, chaired by Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary. โThe Centreโs stand is clearโindividual insurance policies should be exempt,โ he said after the meeting.
Most states backed the proposal, though a few suggested different approaches. The GoM, which includes 13 state finance ministers, will now prepare its final report. This report will be submitted in October to the GST Council, the body that has the final say.

Why This Proposal Matters ?
This isnโt just about cutting taxโitโs about accessibility. Insurance is still seen as a luxury in many households, largely because of high premiums. By pushing GST exemption insurance, the government hopes to bring more people into the safety net of health and life cover.
The proposal also ties into larger tax reforms. The Centre is working toward a simpler structure with only two rates: 5% on essentials and 18% on standard goods and services. Removing GST on insurance would align with this goal and make essential protection products more affordable.
To put things in perspective, the government collected:
- โน8,262.94 crore from health insurance premiums in 2023-24
- โน1,484.36 crore from health reinsurance
While this revenue is significant, experts believe long-term growth in insurance penetration could outweigh short-term losses.
What Happens Next ?
The GoMโs report is expected by October, and if the Council approves, individuals could soon pay lower premiums. This would not only ease the pressure on households but also boost the insurance sector by expanding its reach.
For families worried about rising medical costs and uncertainties, the proposed GST exemption insurance is more than just a tax changeโit could be a lifeline.
