Teen long jumper Shahnavaz Khan achieved a career-defining moment at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar. The 18-year-old from Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, leapt a personal best of 8.04 meters, earning a silver medal in the World Athletics Bronze Level Continental Tour meet. His performance marked not just an athletic milestone but also an emotional tribute to his late father, whose memory continues to drive his passion for the sport.

Shahnavaz Khan Medal Victory in Bhubaneswar

The atmosphere at the Kalinga Stadium was electric as Shahnavaz prepared for his final jumps. His bib carried a deeply personal message: “8+ jump, I miss dad.” That tribute honored his father, a truck driver who passed away in 2018. The leap secured second place, just behind national star Murali Sreeshankar, who claimed gold with an 8.13m jump.

This silver medal places Shahnavaz among India’s most promising young athletes. His 8.04m leap also marked his entry into the prestigious “8-meter club,” a benchmark for elite long jumpers.

Guidance from Senior Pro Led to Breakthrough

The competition began with two fouls, putting Shahnavaz under early pressure. During this tense phase, senior long jumper Sreeshankar Murali, his training partner at the SAI Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, offered crucial advice. Sreeshankar urged him to control his run-up and maintain focus.

That encouragement changed everything. Shahnavaz adjusted his technique, landing a legal jump that not only saved his standing but also set a personal record. The mentorship highlighted the strong bond between the two athletes.

From Village Grounds to International Podium

Shahnavaz hails from Sangrampur village in Uttar Pradesh. His journey began on uneven village grounds, inspired by his cousin Shahruk Khan, the Under-20 national record holder in the 3,000m steeplechase. While Shahruk excelled in running, Shahnavaz found his calling in long jump.

“I love it when I am in the air,” he said, describing the thrill that keeps him motivated. His progress has been steady. In December 2024, he became the Under-18 national champion with a 7.72m jump. Earlier this year, he claimed National Games gold with 7.70m.

Shahnavaz Khan Medal Dream Fuels Bigger Goals

This silver medal has boosted Shahnavaz’s confidence for future international events. He has set his sights on the Olympics, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games. The 8.04m jump reinforced his belief that he can compete against the best in the world.

However, challenges remain. Despite winning the National Games earlier this year, Shahnavaz has yet to receive the promised prize money. “My mother works in the fields to support our family. Every penny matters,” he shared, highlighting the financial pressures that athletes often face.
