A second-year dental student at Sharda University, Jyoti Sharma, was found dead by suicide inside her hostel room late Friday night. The 20-year-old, originally from Gurugram, had left a handwritten suicide note accusing two dental faculty members of persistent mental harassment. The note triggered a strong response from students, law enforcement, and university officials.

In her note, Jyoti accused two professors from the dental department of repeated humiliation and emotional torture. She specifically mentioned they had mentally exhausted her through constant criticism, leading her into deep distress. The suicide note read:

“They mentally harassed me. They humiliated me. I have been in stress because of them for a long time.”

Police confirmed that the letter clearly named both staff members. Following this, the Greater Noida police filed an FIR and arrested the two accused educators. The FIR was lodged at the Knowledge Park Police Station under IPC Section 306 (abetment to suicide).

The police also sealed Jyoti’s room for forensic examination and recorded statements from multiple classmates and hostel staff. Senior officers, including ACP-level personnel, are overseeing the probe.

Soon after the tragedy, Sharda University released a formal statement. The university confirmed that it had formed an internal inquiry committee to investigate the incident independently. It also suspended both faculty members named in the suicide note immediately, pending the investigation.

The university’s spokesperson said:

“We are deeply saddened. The university is fully cooperating with police and assures complete transparency.”

The administration also called for mental health audits and proposed new grievance redressal mechanisms. According to students, this was not the first time concerns were raised about strict faculty behavior. However, no concrete action had been taken earlier.

By Saturday morning, large numbers of students gathered on campus, demanding justice. Slogans like “We want justice” and “Mental torture is murder” echoed across the hostel blocks. Some students accused the university of neglecting mental health and ignoring past complaints.

Protestors demanded:

• Legal assistance for Jyoti’s family
• Mandatory counselling sessions across departments
• Formation of a student-led grievance cell

Meanwhile, Jyoti’s family arrived from Gurugram and identified her body at the mortuary. They also handed over her earlier diary pages to police, which reportedly contain disturbing accounts of academic harassment.

The incident has reignited national debate on student mental health, especially in professional courses. A similar case occurred recently in Odisha, where a B.Ed student self-immolated after alleged faculty harassment. These repeated tragedies highlight serious lapses in institutional support systems.

Mental health professionals stress that universities must provide trained counsellors, safe spaces to report abuse, and clear mechanisms for redressal. Parents and educators across India have now begun calling for nationwide reforms in student welfare policies.

Her suicide has triggered legal, social, and educational repercussions. The outcome of this case may set an important precedent for how Indian universities handle mental harassment moving forward.
