China Hits Back at Trump’s BRICS Remark: ‘We Do Not Seek Confrontation’

Beijing: Amid escalating geopolitical tensions, China has responded to Donald Trump’s sharp criticism of BRICS, stating that it “does not seek confrontation” and opposes the use of tariffs as a coercive tool. The measured yet firm response underscores Beijing’s commitment to multilateral diplomacy even as global power blocs continue to realign. The remarks come after Trump, during a recent campaign event, described the BRICS alliance which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa as a “strategic threat” and hinted at trade penalties if it grows in influence.

Trump’s Warning: ‘BRICS Must Be Watched Closely’

Trump accused BRICS of attempting to “reshape the global economic order” and warned of retaliatory tariffs or trade restrictions if the bloc undermines U.S. interests.Although he did not name China directly, his reference to BRICS’ leadership was seen as a veiled warning to Beijing.

“We won’t let them take over the system we built,” Trump said, referring to global trade frameworks dominated by the West.

China’s Diplomatic Reply: Calm, Yet Clear

China’s Foreign Ministry quickly addressed the statement in a press briefing, asserting that the country is committed to peaceful development and open cooperation.

“China believes in dialogue and mutual respect. Trade should not be weaponized. We do not seek confrontation, but we will protect our interests,” a ministry spokesperson said.

Officials also defended BRICS as a “positive platform” that promotes equitable growth among emerging economies, rejecting any claims of it being a rival bloc.

The BRICS bloc has drawn attention in recent months as more countries including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Iran express interest in joining. This expansion could shift the balance of global economic power, creating concern among Western powers.

China’s reaction reflects a carefully calculated diplomatic tone: firm enough to reject threats, yet restrained enough to avoid escalation.
