Fire Leads to Cash Discovery and Suspicion

The incident occurred on March 14 when a fire broke out in the judgeโ€™s home. Firefighters were called in to control the situation. During the cleanup, they reportedly found large amounts of charred cash.

The unusual find prompted questions about the origin of the money. Officials from the Delhi Police, Home Ministry, and judiciary quickly stepped in to evaluate the situation.

Three-Judge Committee Formed After Cash Recovery Scandal

Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna took swift action. He assembled a three-member inquiry committee, following the courtโ€™s In-House Procedure.

The panel consisted of:

1.Justice Sheel Nagu (Acting Chief Justice of Punjab & Haryana High Court)

2.Justice G S Sandhawalia (Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court)

3.Justice Anu Sivaraman (Judge of Karnataka High Court)

They reviewed fire department reports, police records, and internal statements submitted by the judge and his staff.

Justice Yashwant Varma Defends Himself

Justice Varma, recently transferred to the Allahabad High Court, responded firmly. In his written reply, he denied all allegations. He emphasized that no official or staff member found any cash. He claimed the rumors were meant to tarnish his image.

Despite his defense, the committee concluded that the matter required further scrutiny. Their findings formed the basis for recommending disciplinary action.

CJI Moves Case to President and Prime Minister

On May 3, the inquiry committee submitted its final report to Chief Justice Khanna. Justice Varma also submitted his official response by May 6.

Following protocol, the Chief Justice forwarded all documents to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The CJI urged them to consider initiating removal proceedings under constitutional provisions.

This recommendation reflects the seriousness of the issue and the judiciaryโ€™s effort to maintain transparency.

Supreme Court Responds to Cash Recovery Scandal

In a rare public disclosure, the Supreme Court released a statement about the situation. It confirmed the panelโ€™s findings and the Chief Justiceโ€™s recommendation. Officials noted that the judiciary would allow the constitutional process to take its course.

If the President and PM approve, the matter could be discussed in Parliament for formal removal.

Judiciary Faces Critical Moment

The cash recovery scandal involving Justice Varma raises serious questions about judicial integrity. While the investigation remains confidential, its impact has become public.

The judiciaryโ€™s prompt and structured response shows its commitment to self-regulation. As the process moves forward, many await a final decision that may set a precedent for future accountability.
