Rohit Bids Goodbye to the Red Ball

At 38, Rohit Sharma retires from Test cricket, leaving behind a rich legacy of leadership, resilience, and remarkable innings.

Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 7, 2025, at the age of 38. This decision signifies a closure of an important chapter in Indian cricket history because Sharma has been a central character for India in all its successes in the past ten years. While he retires from the longest format, he will still continue playing ODIs for India, the form of the game, he is exceedingly talented in.

Test Career

Rohit Sharma played his first Test match on November 6, 2013. There he took to the field against the West Indies at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. He has had 67 matches in his Test career, scoring a total of 4,301 runs, with an average of 40.57. It includes 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries. His highest Test score is 212, scored against South Africa in Ranchi in 2019.

Major Milestones

Debut accomplishment: Scored 177 runs in debut match, which was one of the highest scores by an Indian debut player.

Century scored outside of India: Scored his first Test Century outside of India, 127 runs at The Oval, London, in 2021.

Captain of the Indian team: In February 2022, Sharma was made India’s Test captain and played in 24 matches with the Indian team winning 12 matches.

Reasons for Retirement

After a stretch of declining form, Sharma’s retirement from Test cricket has been announced. In his last 19 innings he has only scored one century, and his poor performance was one of the reasons for India’s recent defeats in Test series, in which they lost to New Zealand and Australia. He also did not even play the final Test he was part of against Australia earlier in the year because he was not in good form.

Tributes and Farewells from Teammates

After Sharma’s announcement, he received heartfelt tributes from teammates and friends in cricket:

Virat Kohli: He thanked Sharma for his career, and said, “Rohit’s journey in Test cricket has been awe-inspiring. His contribution to cricket, captaincy, and batting has been legacy-filled.”

Ravichandran Ashwin: He  said, “It was great to play Test cricket with Rohit. His calmness and strategy always helped us.”

Jasprit Bumrah:  He mentioned, “Captain Rohit helped me grow as a player. I will miss him in the dressing room”

The BCCI also recognized his career and contributions, and called his retirement “the end of an era.”

Legacy and Impact

Rohit Sharma’s Test career epitomized grace, resilience, and captaincy. He possessed the skill to perform in adverse conditions, both at home and abroad. He delivered stability to the team in a transitional period as captain.

While his Test career draws to a close, Sharma’s impact on Indian cricket lives on, and as a featured player in ODIs, fans can still enjoy his exceptional ability on the field.
