RG Kar Rape-Murder Case: CBI Tightens Net with 12 New Witnesses, 200 Videos

KOLKATA: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) submitted its third status report to the Sealdah court. It detailed major developments in the investigation of the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident happened on August 9, 2024, and sparked public anger.

New Witnesses Add Key Insights

CBI lawyer Parthasarathi Dutta informed the court that the agency interviewed 12 new witnesses in April. This follows 24 earlier interviews since March. So far, 36 people have been questioned. Their accounts may reveal overlooked details.

Complaints and Video Footage Under Scrutiny

The CBI received over 100 email complaints related to the case. Some emails mention possible roles of hospital staff. Although no staff members are named in the FIR, the CBI is checking each complaint against existing evidence.

Investigators are also reviewing 200+ video clips and CCTV footage. The visuals come from inside and around the hospital, especially from the hours near the crime. This could help map movements and spot suspects.

Parallel Hearing in Calcutta High Court

While the Sealdah court reviews the CBI’s report, a hearing is ongoing in the Calcutta High Court. The victim’s parents want a deeper probe. They feel important leads remain untouched and have asked for a wider investigation.

Victim’s Lawyer Shares New Information

On Monday, the family’s lawyer Amitava Dey gave the judge three documents for review. One was a WhatsApp group screenshot showing the victim’s phone was accessed three months after her death. This raises concerns about evidence security.

However, the document wasn’t officially shared with the CBI. The agency asked the family to send any relevant evidence directly to them.Previous Conviction Still Under Question

Even though ex-civic volunteer Sanjay Roy was convicted of the crime, the case is not closed. The victim’s family and other groups believe there are deeper issues. They highlight hospital safety failures and possible staff involvement.

The CBI is checking if Roy had help and whether weak protocols allowed the crime to happen.

Next Hearing on June 10

The court will hear the case again on June 10, 2025. By then, the CBI will submit another report. It might include fresh evidence or lead to more arrests.
