Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh | April 19, 2025

Recently, a major controversy has erupted over the tragic deaths of over 100 cows at the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) cowshed. Consequently, opposition leaders have accused the TTD administration of negligence, which has led to widespread protests and heightened political tensions. Moreover, the political fallout is gaining momentum, as both ruling and opposition parties are now engaged in a fierce debate over the issue.

Cattle Deaths Controversy Triggers Public Protests

On April 9, 2025, former Tirupati MLA and ex-chairman of the TTD trust board, Karunakar Reddy Bhumana , shared disturbing images of deceased cows at the TTD cowshed. He claimed that more than 100 cattle had died due to administrative negligence in the last month. As a result, opposition leaders have intensified their criticism of the TTD administration. Furthermore, Bhumana and other opposition members attempted to visit the cowshed to investigate, but they were blocked by police citing law and order concerns. In response, Bhumana staged a protest on the road, which was joined by Tirupati MP M Gurumoorthy and other members of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP). Thus, the controversy has quickly turned into a full-fledged political issue, with public protests gaining traction.

Political Fallout of the Cattle Deaths Controversy

The incident has triggered a political war between the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the opposition YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) . While YSRCP leaders have accused the TDP government of concealing evidence of negligence , the ruling party has vehemently denied these claims. According to TDP MLA B Sudheer Reddy , the opposition’s allegations are baseless and part of a political strategy to discredit the government. However, opposition leaders insist that the situation could have been handled better and that public trust in the TTD administration is eroding.

TTD Denies Allegations Amid Growing Scrutiny

In light of the increasing scrutiny, TTD Chairman BR Naidu has denied all allegations. He termed them as part of a malicious conspiracy aimed at undermining the reputation of the temple and its administration. Moreover, Naidu claimed that the administration had followed all necessary protocols to ensure the well-being of the cattle at the cowshed. He further emphasized that the deaths were not due to any negligence on their part. Nonetheless, these claims have done little to quell the public outrage, which is only growing.

Images of Dead Cattle Intensify Public Outrage

The controversy gained significant momentum when disturbing photographs of the deceased cows began circulating on social media platforms. Consequently, these images have intensified the public outrage, as many people have raised concerns about the conditions at the TTD cowshed . Furthermore, the situation has sparked debates over the responsibility of religious institutions in maintaining the welfare of animals in their care. As a result, the TTD administration is under increasing pressure to explain the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Investigation Underway: Political and Legal Ramifications

An official investigation has now been launched into the allegations. Authorities are under pressure to provide clarity on whether mismanagement occurred at the cowshed. Meanwhile, political analysts suggest that the outcome of the investigation could have significant ramifications for the ruling party. Moreover, it could also affect the future of the TTD administration and its role in managing public trust. Therefore, all eyes are on the authorities as they proceed with the inquiry.

What This Controversy Means for Religious Institutionsโ€™ Accountability

The ongoing cattle deaths controversy highlights critical issues regarding the accountability of religious institutions in managing animal welfare. It raises concerns about the extent to which these institutions should be held responsible for such incidents. Consequently, the outcome of this controversy will likely influence how similar institutions across India handle such matters in the future.
