Rome or Oman? Iran-U.S. Nuclear Talks Face Unexpected Diplomatic Twist
The latest round of nuclear negotiations between Iran and the U.S. was expected to take place in Rome this Saturday, but Iran has now insisted on Oman as the venue, sparks questions on US diplomatic credentials

Historical Context
To understand the present complexity of the relationship between Iran and the USA, we need to go back to past to broader our understanding of why it has all started. History repeats itself twice, first as the tragedy and second at the farce, marked by Hegel. The Civil โ Nuclear Deal was signed between the US and Iran in 2015 to contain Iran and was restricted to 3.67% uranium enrichment levels under the deal. Later, in 2018, unilaterally evoked the deal. Thereafter, tension erupts between the two parties. On July 14, 2015, P5+1 (China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States), the European Union (EU), and Iran reached a Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) to ensure that Iranโs nuclear program would be exclusively peaceful.
Latest Developments
The main contentions between Iran and the US are the uranium threshold and nuclear programs. Ongoing geopolitical tension erupted due to Chinaโs rise and devaluation of the US dollar, which further aggravated the situation. In 2015, secret Iran and the US Civil Nuclear Deal Talk were conducted under the leadership of Oman, who was neutral and played a decisive role as a mediator between the opposing parties.
Omanโs mediator Role
Muscat, Oman plays an importance role and acts as an intermediary between the US and Iran though it is located near Iran and has a history of hosting innumerous high-level talks between Iran and the Western front. Gulf nations, including Saudia Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE have praised Omaniโs diplomatic efforts. Omanโs mediation is seen as constructive, fostering dialogue and regional stability. Infact there is uncertainty where will be the venue.
As the US continues negotiations with Iran to curb its nuclear programme, it is also moving toward finalising a preliminary civil nuclear agreement with Iranโs regional rival, Saudi Arabia, hoping that the future will hold grip for the prosperous and peaceful world. Past geo-political tensions were converted present negotiations.
