From Rising Star to Goodbye: Will Pucovski Retires at 27

Once regarded as a prodigy of Australian cricket — someone who many believed would play at least 100 Tests for the country. Will Pucovski has taken the heartbreaking decision to retire from all forms of cricket. The call comes following a long and painful battle with repeated concussions, which derailed what could’ve been one of the great modern-day batting careers.

The 27-year-old exclusively revealed his decision with Gerard Whateley on SEN’s Whateley on Tuesday morning.

Will last played his only Test match for Australia against India in 2021, where he showed his potential with a composed 62 in the first innings. But fate had other plans. A shoulder injury sustained while fielding ruled him out of the rest of the series. It would be his first and last appearance in the Baggy Green.

Despite that setback, his domestic career was filled with promise. He featured 36 times at First-Class level, scoring seven centuries and nine fifties, including a remarkable top score of 255 not out against South Australia in 2020. His last First-Class hundred came at the SCG against New South Wales in February 2024 in what ended up being his second-last professional match.

The final decision to step away came after a medical panel formally recommended he retire last year due to the ongoing impact of concussions.

In his emotional conversation with SEN Whateley, Will admitted the weight of the moment.

“I wish I was coming in under better circumstances… I’m not going to be playing cricket again. It’s been a really difficult year to put it as simply as possible. The simple message is, I won’t be playing at any level again.”

After scoring a century in Sydney earlier this year, Will believed things were beginning to fall into place.

“After that century in Sydney (in my second-last game), I thought from a personal point of view, things were starting to click for me. I put a mountain of effort into getting things right off the field to be good on the field.”

For Will, playing for Australia was more than a dream — it was a purpose. And that dream was just beginning.

“It had always been my dream to play for Australia. I found myself in that position in 2021. My ambition didn’t stop there. I wanted to be that guy who was a leader of the batting unit. I wanted to play 100 Tests.
Unfortunately, one Test is where it ends.”

Following his final concussion, Will opened up about the overwhelming struggles he endured in the months that followed.

“In the couple of months post that (last concussion), I struggled to get anything done. Walking around the house was a struggle. My fiancée was annoyed because I didn’t contribute to chores. I was sleeping a lot.”

“From there, it’s been a tough year. A lot of the symptoms didn’t go away, which has led me to this decision. The first few months were horrendous, but the symptoms just didn’t leave me.”

“I’ve only just turned 27. In the space of concussion, that’s very young. Speaking to a lot of specialists, this is a difficult space to deal with. The technology isn’t quite there to understand what is what. When you have symptoms for over a year — and I’ve had others for numerous years — it can be quite difficult to see how I can go out and play professional sport again when I’m struggling to live my life the way I want to.”

A Career That Ends Too Soon, But Not Without Impact

Will Pucovski’s journey is a bittersweet one — filled with brilliance, burden, and bravery. While the cricketing world saw only a glimpse of what he could become, those glimpses were enough to show us a rare and gifted player, with a temperament that belied his age.

His story is also a stark reminder of the silent battles athletes often fight behind the scenes. Will chose health over heroics, life over legacy  and that in itself takes a kind of courage the scoreboard can never measure.
